How Indian Students Get Into German Universities: The Complete Path
Germany's public universities charge little or no tuition, teach hundreds of programmes in English, and are open to Indian applicants — but the road in has more stages than most students expect. This guide walks the whole path in order, from 12th grade or a bachelor's degree to actually enrolling, so you can see where you are and what comes next.
Step 0: Check that you qualify
Germany calls the entry ticket a Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB) — a university entrance qualification. Whether your Indian education counts depends on what you are applying for:
- Master's applicants: a recognised Indian bachelor's degree in a related field is normally your HZB. This is the simpler case.
- Bachelor's applicants: an Indian 12th-grade certificate alone often does not grant direct entry. Commonly cited routes to eligibility include completing a year of a recognised bachelor's programme in India, qualifying through specific national exams, or attending a Studienkolleg in Germany (more on that below). The definitive answer for your exact certificates comes from the DAAD admission database at daad.de and from the universities themselves.
Step 1: APS and the dMAT
Every Indian applicant's paperwork runs through the APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) in New Delhi, which verifies that your marksheets and degrees are genuine. The APS certificate is mandatory for your German student visa, and universities increasingly expect it with applications.
As part of the standard APS procedure, Indian applicants now sit the dMAT — the digital Master Test run by g.a.s.t., which replaced TestAS. It is a computer-based aptitude exam: three Core subtests (figure sequences, mathematical equations, Latin squares) of 25 minutes each plus a General Academic Module, about 165 minutes in total. Start APS before you finish your university shortlist. You do not need an admission letter to begin, verification takes weeks, and the dMAT needs booking and preparation time. Running APS in parallel with your applications is the single biggest scheduling win on this path.

Shortlist eight to twelve programmes, then read each one's admission page line by line. Requirements differ far more between programmes than between countries:
- Language: English-taught programmes usually ask for IELTS or TOEFL; German-taught ones ask for TestDaF, DSH or equivalent. Minimum scores are set per programme.
- Subject fit: master's programmes often require specific credit counts in core subjects (say, mathematics for a data science degree) — check the module requirements, not just the degree name.
- Extras: some programmes want a GRE score, a portfolio, work experience or a motivation letter. Note every item with its deadline.
Step 3: Apply — uni-assist or direct
German universities take applications through two channels, and most applicants end up using both:
- uni-assist is a central service that checks international documents for its member universities. You upload documents once, pay a handling fee per application, and uni-assist evaluates your qualifications before forwarding your file. Some universities only want uni-assist's preliminary evaluation document (a VPD), which you then attach to a direct application.
- Direct application through the university's own portal, used by universities that are not uni-assist members or that run their own admissions for certain programmes.
Each programme's page tells you which channel it uses. Do not assume — the same university can use different channels for different degrees.
The Studienkolleg route
If your 12th-grade certificate does not give direct bachelor's access, a Studienkolleg is the standard bridge: a one-year foundation course in Germany, ending in the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP) assessment, which then serves as your entrance qualification. Studienkollegs teach in German and typically require solid German skills (often around B1–B2) just to get in, and admission to public ones can itself be competitive. If this is your route, add roughly a year to your timeline and start German early.
Deadlines: winter and summer intake
German universities admit twice a year, and the winter intake is much larger, with the full range of programmes on offer:
- Winter semester (lectures start around October): application deadlines commonly fall around mid-July, but many competitive or international programmes close far earlier — some as early as winter or spring of the same year.
- Summer semester (lectures start around April): deadlines commonly fall around mid-January, and fewer programmes admit at all.
Treat these as patterns, not promises: every university sets its own dates, and uni-assist needs your file well before the university's deadline. Work backwards from the earliest deadline on your shortlist.
After admission: visa and enrolment
- Accept your offer and note the enrolment deadline on the admission letter.
- Show proof of funds — usually a blocked account (Sperrkonto) holding a fixed amount for one year of living costs. The required amount is adjusted periodically; take the current figure from official sources, not from last year's blog posts.
- Apply for the student visa with your admission letter, APS certificate, financial proof and insurance. Appointment waits vary by season and consulate, so book early.
- Enrol (Immatrikulation) after arrival: submit originals, pay the semester contribution, and you are a registered student.
The order matters more than speed. APS before visa, language test before application deadlines, blocked account before the visa appointment. Map your dates once, backwards from your intake, and the path stops feeling chaotic.
